A confrontation between BJP MLA Narendra Singh Kushwaha and Bhind District Collector Sanjeev Srivastava has spiraled into a major political controversy, with the opposition seizing on the incident to attack the ruling BJP over farmer distress and the conduct of its legislators.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday when Kushwaha, angered over complaints of fertiliser shortages, stormed into the collector’s residence accompanied by his supporters. Eyewitnesses said the MLA accused the collector of corruption, calling him “the biggest thief,” and in the middle of the heated exchange, even raised his hand as if to strike the officer. His supporters shouted slogans inside the premises, creating chaos before the situation was finally brought under control.
Earlier in the day, Kushwaha had staged a sit-in protest at the collector’s office to highlight farmers’ grievances. Farmers have been alleging mismanagement in fertilizer distribution during the crucial kharif sowing season, with both small and large landholders reportedly receiving equal quantities of fertiliser. Many small farmers, women, and elderly cultivators were forced to wait in long queues without getting supplies.
While the concerns of farmers are genuine, Kushwaha’s aggressive approach has drawn sharp criticism. Administrative officials described the act as an attempt to intimidate a senior officer and undermine the dignity of governance. Political analysts say such episodes reflect growing friction between elected representatives and the bureaucracy, raising doubts about the ability of the ruling party to maintain institutional discipline.
The Opposition Congress has wasted no time in turning the incident into a political weapon. Madhya Pradesh Congress Media Department Chairman Mukesh Nayak strongly condemned the MLA’s conduct, saying, “When BJP MLAs themselves are threatening and abusing officers, what message does it send to the people of Madhya Pradesh? This Government has completely failed to provide fertilisers to farmers and now its leaders are trying to cover up their failures by attacking officials. The BJP
must answer whether this is the discipline they preach about.”
Within the BJP, the episode has caused deep embarrassment. Party insiders admit that Kushwaha’s outburst has not only tarnished the party’s image but also risked straining ties with the bureaucracy. With elections approaching, the leadership is under pressure to take corrective measures—both to reassure farmers and to signal that indiscipline will not be tolerated. Disciplinary
action against the MLA is being discussed, though no formal announcement has been made.
The controversy also brings into focus recurring complaints of fertiliser shortages across Madhya Pradesh. Despite repeated assurances from the Government that stocks are adequate, reports of inequitable allocation and mismanagement continue to surface. Unless these systemic issues are resolved, confrontations like the one in Bhind could recur, damaging the credibility of both the administration and the ruling party.
