Militants planning serial blasts in Assam: DGP

Anti-talk factions of the militant outfits like the Ulfa, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and Kamatapuri liberation Organisation (KlO) might try to carry out serial explosions in Assam, newly appointed Director General of Assam Police Khagen Sarma told media on Friday.

The newly appointed DGP said this after taking charge from outgoing DGP JN Choudhury on Friday. Choudhury has recently been appointed as the Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) after his two-year stint as the DGP, Assam. “While the anti-talk faction of Ulfa led by Paresh Baruah and anti-talk faction of NDFB led by its leader IK Songbijit has been planning serial blasts, the KlO has also decided to target certain communities in Assam,” Sarma said.

“The anti-talk Ulfa faction led by Baruah has also initiated a move to unite all the northeastern militant outfits and Maoists rebels operating in Assam,” he said adding that this, however, is a failed experiment initiated by the outfit in the past. Sarma, an IPS officer of the 1982 batch, said that the law and order situation in the State has improved compared to past.

He also expressed concern over the growing Maoist activities in the State and said that there are about 100 trained Maoists cadres in Assam. “The Assam Police have been able to nab some of the prominent Maoist leaders in the past. However, the growth of their activities in Assam is a matter of concern,” he added.

Sarma also said that there had been growth in petty crimes like theft and dacoity and drug paddling as the police in Assam remained mostly busy in dealing with the insurgent activities in the past. “However, I’ll ensure that all the crimes are tackled with equal strictness,” he said.
