An unidentified militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in frontier district of Kupwara on Friday morning, police claimed. They said that the Mouldari forested area in Handwara pocket of Kupwara was cordoned off on Thursday evening after the security forces received tip-off about the presence of militants there.
The security forces also cordoned off Pattan township in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday morning. Sources said the police had information that a group of militants was around but the armed men fled away before the arrival of security forces. Militants belonging to lashkar-e-Tayyeba and Hizbul Mujahideen are reportedly active in the area and involve in target killings of policemen and elected village representatives.
In another incident, police took JKlF chairman Yasin Malik and his separatist colleagues Javed Mir and Shabir Dar into custody when they landed at Srinagar Airport. Malik was arrested in Delhi and deported to Srinagar to foil his proposed sit-in at Jantar Mantar.
