Militant outfit's head nabbed in Assam

In what might be termed as a significant achievement, the police and security forces in Assam have nabbed the chairman of the Karbi Peoples’ liberation Tigers (KPlT), a militant outfit mainly based in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

Guwahati based Defence spokesman lt. Col. Suneet Newton on Wednesday said that KPlT chairman Dondri Kramsa alias Sing Hanse was arrested from Dokmoka area in the district late on Tuesday night.

“The Army unit based at Karbi Anglong district headquarters Diphu and the police received a tip off that the KPlT chairman had been taking shelter in the area and accordingly an operation have been launched,” Newton said adding that the arrest is a big catch.

One .22 pistol with magazine and ten rounds of live rounds were recovered his possession, he said. It may be mentioned here that the KPlT is a breakaway faction of the erstwhile Karbi longri North Cachar Hills liberation Front (KlNlF), which had laid down arms and ammunition in 2010. However, 25 leaders of the outfit deserted the group and floated the KPlT in 2011 and had been carrying out severe extortion drives in and around the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts of Assam.

With the arrest of the chairman, the outfit had received a lethal blow. The arrest of the KPlT chairman came at a time when the outfit was trying to strengthen it by recruiting more cadres in remote locations of the district. In June last year, the cadres of the outfit had killed Nitya Nanda Goswami, the then SP of the Hamren Police district in Assam and his PSO during an operation.
