Mumbai blasts accused Yakub Abdul Razak Memon has knocked the doors of the Supreme Court yet again on Thursday seeking a stay on his execution slated for July 30.
In a petition moved by his lawyers, Memon has asked for an immediate stay on his execution till his legal remedies are fully exhausted. Soon after the Supreme Court rejected his curative petition on Tuesday, Memon filed a mercy petition with the Maharashtra Governor under Article 161 of Constitution.
In May last year, the President rejected his mercy petition. As the Supreme Court had upheld his death sentence on March 21, 2013, he pursued simultaneously with the Court by filing a review petition which too was dismissed on April 9 this year. The dismissal of curative made his execution certain.
Memon’s review petition was heard by a three-judge bench in open court as it involved a serious question of life and death. He had submitted in the petition that he suffered from schizophrenia due to the over 20-year period of incarceration. His lawyers even argued that this was a case of excessive punishment where besides living in the shadow of death, he had suffered a jail term of over two decades.
