In the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Meghalaya Police have successfully secured transit remands for all five accused, including the victim’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, paving the way for their transport to Shillong for further interrogation and investigation. Multiple police teams were involved in coordinated efforts across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to bring the alleged conspirators into custody.
Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder, was located at a roadside eatery near the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road in Uttar Pradesh. After being initially held at a Sakhi One Stop Centre and undergoing a medical examination, Sonam was produced before a local magistrate in Ghazipur on Monday night.
Meghalaya Police successfully secured a three-day transit remand from the court. Subsequently, she was taken to Phulwari Sharif police station in Patna, Bihar, on Tuesday and reached Shillong in the evening. Sonam has reportedly claimed to have no memory of how she reached Ghazipur, attributing it to being drugged by abductors.
Meanwhile, a separate team of Meghalaya Police operated in Madhya Pradesh to take custody of the other four accused- Raj Kushwaha (Sonam’s alleged lover and co-conspirator), Akash Rajput, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. These four individuals were presented before a Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Indore on Monday night, where Meghalaya Police secured a seven-day transit remand.
The fourth accused, Anand Kurmi, who was traced to Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, was brought to Indore and was expected to be produced in court on Tuesday for his transit remand. All four male accused are now in the custody of Meghalaya Police and are being brought to Shillong for comprehensive interrogation, with their arrival
expected by Wednesday.
The Meghalaya Special Investigation Team (SIT) Chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor reiterated that Sonam and Raj Kushwaha are considered the prime accused in the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi.
The systematic transportation of all accused to Shillong marks a crucial phase in the investigation. Police plan to conduct joint interrogations and possibly recreate the crime scene to piece together the full narrative of the murder, which allegedly involved a pre-meditated plot hatched by Sonam and Raj. The investigation continues as authorities work to ensure swift justice in this high-profile case that has gripped national attention.
As per police revelations, Sonam booked tickets for herself and Raja to travel to Guwahati and Shillong, notably without booking any return tickets for her husband. Raj Kushwaha then allegedly involved his friends — Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kurmi, and Akash Rajput - in the conspiracy. Sonam reportedly provided a second mobile phone and SIM card to communicate with the conspirators and supplied them with money, promising more funds upon the successful completion of the murder.
