MEA to approach UK for lalit Modi's extradition after ED clarifications

The legal department of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has sought some clarifications from Enforcement Directorate before processing the extradition request for former IPl chairman lalit Modi from United Kingdom.

“Keeping in mind the sensitivity of the case, Enforcement Directorate has been requested to intimate their concurrence on the options and suggestions made by the MEA and to advise us how to proceed further in the matter. Now, we are awaiting comments of the Enforcement Directorate,” MEA Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said on Thursday. He added that the MEA’s legal experts have vetted the extradition request, but the formal request from their side would be sent to British authorities only after getting ED’s response.

Modi is facing money laundering charges for which the ED wants his presence in India. last month, ED had requested MEA to take up with UK the issue of extraditing Modi. The ED’s request was examined by MEA’s legal team which raised certain queries in the matter.

In August last year, the ED had moved the Interpol for a red corner notice against Modi but the international police body has not obliged it as yet.  Interpol authorities have, time and again, sought additional information from ED investigators on their money laundering case against Modi as part of the process to issue a world-wide warrant against him.
