Two star BJP candidates in Bengal — magician PC Sorcar and singer Babul Supriyo — are under the glare of the Election Commission following complaints filed against them for violating the Model Code of Conduct.
The Commission on Tuesday filed an FIR against Sorcar, BJP candidate from Barasat, even as it found “unsatisfactory” his explanations of certain “objectionable” statements made by him against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and sitting Barasat MP Dr Kakoli Ghoshdastidar.
Sorcar is the BJP candidate from Barasat where he seems to have made the competition tough for the Trinamool Congress.
The FIR had been sent to the Barasat inspector in-charge of police “for necessary actions” EC sources at the district collectorate said adding the police were “weighing up all options and would take necessary action accordingly.”
Sorcar had earlier condemned the Chief Minister for dismissing the rising incidents of rapes as parts of conspiracies hatched by the opposition and told a television reporter as to “how these people will feel” if they were meted out the same treatment.
He also called Dr Dastidar a mad gynaecologist who needed mental treatment for making light the incidents of rapes at Barasat — which had seen manifold rise in attack against women over the past couple of years — “Send her to me and I will treat her,” he said.
When the EC demanded an explanation for such comments Sorcar wrote back that he had only conveyed to the TV channel what the people thought about those in power.
Unsatisfied with the explanation the Commission on Tuesday filed an FIR against Sorcar who however refused comment on the issue.
In a similar incident a complaint was lodged by an activist group against Babul Supriyo for what it said “drunken campaigning.” The allegation was promptly refuted by the Bollywood singer.
Asansol Citizen’s Forum a social activist group reportedly backed by the Trinamool Congress has filed a complaint against Babul Supriyo for campaigning at Ranibazar and other areas of Asansol in a drunken State.
