NEW DELHI: A massive fire broke out at a shop in Delhi’s Ghaffar Market in the early hours of Friday, prompting the deployment of 22 fire tenders to control the blaze. No casualties or injuries have been reported.
The fire broke out at a shop in Puri Plaza, located in 13 Block, Chain Wali Gali, in the Karol Bagh market. The Delhi Fire Service received an emergency call around 1.30 am, following which fire tenders and additional water bowsers were rushed to the spot.
The flames spread to adjoining shops in the densely packed commercial area. Firefighting operations continued for more than seven hours, according to reports.
Narrow lanes and the small size of shops made it difficult for large fire engines to reach the affected area. Firefighters stationed the larger vehicles on the main road and laid water pipes into the market to reach the blaze. Overhead wires and inflammable electronic goods also added to the challenges.
The market was closed when the fire broke out, which helped prevent casualties. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. An investigation is expected to begin after cooling operations are completed.
