The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Monday clarified that IAS aspirant Manjunath, who committed suicide over an alleged goof up in the civil service exams results, did not even qualify in the preliminary exams.

The commission, which conducts the prestigious examination to select IAS, IPS and IFS among others, has also denied that there was any error in the final results as reported in the media.

According to UPSC, a candidate by the name of V Y Manjunath, son of Yadav Murthy VP, had applied for Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, 2012. He was allotted roll no 538950 and was allotted Bangalore as centre for this examination. The candidate had actually appeared from this centre under roll no 538950. However, he failed to qualify in the Civil Services (Prelim) Examination, 2012.

UPSC said no candidate with roll number (538950) or with the name (Manjunath V Y) had appeared for the Civil Services Main Examination or the interview. According to police, 24-year-old Manjunath, a resident of Shrirampura in Bangalore had allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in an under construction building on May 10 after he had left for his friend’s house in Kodagu area. The UPSC has expressed sorrow and grief over Manjunath’s death. Police said the deceased was upset over a ‘goof-up’ in the UPSC results.

Manjunath had reportedly contacted UPSC officials and also written to them seeking clarification over the alleged mix-up in the result. Aggrieved over no response, he took the extreme step, police said.
