The man-eating tiger that remained elusive in Hedilaya forest range was killed near Haadanur village in Bandipur forest range in Karnataka on late Thursday evening.
Forest officials said they killed the tiger when it pounced on watcher Shivakumar when he was preparing to tie a calf near a bush to trap the carnivore.
Shivakumar, a native of Bogapura village near Chamrajnagar, who suffered injuries in the incident was shifted to JSS Hospital in Mysuru. ACF Venkatesh and Wildlife Warden Naveen Kumar showed the pictures of the dead tiger to villagers, much to their relief.
The forest officials, under pressure after the tiger had killed farmer Shivanna of Hadanur and injured onlooker Narendra on Tuesday, had started combing operations with elephants Parthasarathy, Rohit and Ganesha.
In a bid to tranquillise the tiger, the forest officials, who identified pug marks within 300 metres from where Shivanna had been attacked, moved with elephants on Thursday evening. To their surprise, the tiger pounced on Shivakumar. This forced the staff to gun down the animal to save the man.
