The Mamata Banerjee Government on Wednesday took three major decisions towards ensuring a better industrial growth. First, the cash-starved Government has decided to permanently close down three perennially sick industrial units and divest a fourth one. Second, it has approved the construction of a deepsea port at Digha.
This apart, the State will develop Salt lake and Rajarhaat into Green Cities to match the much publicised “smart cities” declared by the Centre sources at the State secretariat said.
The three public sector units that the State Government will close down are lily products, Neo Tyre and Tube and National Irons, sources said adding State will also disinvest the Durgapur-based Durgapur Chemicals.
“All these units had been lying closed since the left Front regime but repeated attempts to revive them have failed,” a Minister said adding none of the workers would however lose their jobs and they would be relocated to other units.
This apart the Government on Wednesday also decided to construct a deep sea port at Digha a sea shore tourist destination on the Bay of Bengal. “After construction we will have a 15-metre draught during the tide which means that the big ships can also come here” State Finance Minister Amit Mitra said an 18-km channel will also be constructed here.
“After construction the new port will be comparable to the Paradeep Port,” he said.
Incidentally the State Government is also planning to construct India’s first under-water aquarium at Digha.
Besides, the State Government has also decided to promote Salt lake and Rajarhaat as Green Cities which will match the smart cities being promoted by the Centre, sources said.
