Citing unleashing of series of violence by Trinamool Congress, the Forward Bloc on Tuesday said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no right to speak about democratic unity at national level as she miserably failed to ensure democratic rights in her State.
In a statement here, G Devarajan, national secretary of Forward Bloc, said Mamata has killed democracy in West Bengal by not allowing opposition parties to file candidature in Panchayat elections.
“So far three people are killed and hundreds have been seriously injured due to TMC attack since April 2, when nomination began for the Panchayat elections. Senior leaders like Basudev Acharya Ex. MP (CPI-M), Ramchandra Dom Ex.MP (CPI-M) and Biswanath Karak Ex.MlA (Forward Bloc) etc have been attacked and seriously injured in the hands of the TMC goondas. They even don’t spare the women candidates. In Arambhag of Hooghly District, Bhirbhum, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Purulia etc women and senior leaders of the left parties and other opposition parties have been attacked brutally by the ruling party. Political clashes will take place during elections in our country. But what is going on in West Bengal is unprecedented and undemocratic,” said Devarajan.
“Mamata recently acted as a champion for democratic secular unity at national level and met several leaders of regional parties with her mission. Now, these reports of Bengal violence in the name of ‘oppositio- free Panchayat’ and her party’s infamous role in shattering the democracy in the state will be brought to the notices of all regional party leaders who met Mamata at New Delhi and Kolkata. The Bengal Chief Minister should remember that one who does not practice democracy has no right to speak about democracy,” he said.
