Making 'Environment Science' compulsory: SC directs Govt to form Core Committee

Published on:

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to form a Core Committee to examine how far ‘Environment Science’ had been made a compulsory subject in college and school curricula following an apex court judgment of 1991.

The Bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice AM Khanwilkar sought a response from the Centre within a week following a plea by environment activist MC Mehta. It was on Mehta’s PIl that the SC in 1991 had directed a subject on Environment to be compulsorily taught in schools and colleges. Mehta complained that 25 years down the line, nothing had been achieved.

The Bench asked Additional Solicitor General PS Patwalia to ask the concerned Ministries — HRD and Environment Ministries — to form a Core Committee and supervise in how many state and Central schools or Universities the direction of the Court had been implemented. The Bench posted the matter on September 23.
