Former Union Minister and Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken has written to the party leadership seeking permission to double the number of his block committees and bring down the annual membership fee from Rs250 to one time amount of Rs25. Seeking more powers for the block committees, Maken has strongly recommended that the names during the ticket distribution should emanate from the blocks through free and frank discussions among its active members.
In a letter to the party’s in-charge of Delhi affairs PC Chacko, Maken has said that about 175 people had put forward their suggestions for the party’s resurgence and revitalising membership drive. He has suggested that there should be single membership in the party. Maken has said that the concept of active membership should be reintroduced in the party. “Party workers who enroll at least 25 new members be declared active members. Active members will be eligible to become office-bearers and participate in decision-making.” The letter said: “All Congress members should be given identity cards by the DPCC, on which the photos of Congress president (Sonia Gandhi) and party vice-president (Rahul) should be placed.”
