Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s idea of ‘Make in India’ seems to have been materialised in his home State Gujarat. In last three years, Gujarat has topped the list of States by contributing projects worth over `100,000 crores in the manufacturing sector.
As per the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Gujarat and its neighbouring State Maharashtra are doing extremely well, followed by West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
In the last three years, Gujarat has registered an investment of `49,616 crore in 2012, `15,478 crore in 2013 and `40,348 crore in October, 2014. Meanwhile, corresponding figures for Maharashtra are `7,509 crore, `30, 266 crore and `5,437 crore, respectively.
In 2014, so far, Gujarat has implemented 66 Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum (IEMs) worth `40, 348 crore up to October end. Compared to Gujarat, Maharashtra could contribute IEMs worth `5,437 crore during the same period.
IEMs are being registered with the Union Commerce Ministry by various companies in order to set up new industrial units or also in the case of expansion of existing industrial units. Once the units registered under Commerce Ministry commission, key information regarding commissioned units are being apprised to DIPP.
Interestingly, Gujarat accounts for 60 per cent of the total `67,600 crore manufacturing projects in 2014 up to October across the country. A senior official in the Gujarat’s Industries Department said that as a result of branding and marketing of the State over the period of last one decade. Moreover, proactive approach of the State Government and speedy clearance encouraged private players to commission projects in time, he added.
