In first of its kind medical feat achieved in Maharashtra, a 59-year-old man underwent a Robotic Kidney transplant surgery at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre (HNRF), with his wife donating the organ to her husband.

A team of doctors, led by Dr Inderbir Gill, Head of Department, Urology and Robotics, HNRF, and MD, Distinguished Professor and Chair, USC Institute of Urology, University of Southern California, performed the Robotic Kidney transplant surgery on CN Murlidharan, a resident of Andheri (WEST), who had been to the hospital with renal failure.

Prior to the transplant, Murlidharan’s family was apprised about the latest robotic technology and its benefits, including lesser risk of infection, lesser pain, and a faster return to normalcy. The surgery enables greater precision over vascular anastomosis owing to higher magnification and finer scaled movements of robotic instruments. Muridharan underwent the surgery on Sunday, after he and family members gave a go-ahead.

“It has been our privilege to perform the first of its kind first robotic kidney transplant in Maharashtra at HNRF hospital. The entire team worked together seamlessly and we are thrilled that the patient and the donor are doing well and the operation was a great success,” Dr Gill said.

“With this experience and great outcome, we want to make HNRF hospital the primary destination for robotic kidney transplants, not only in Mumbai, but the entire country,” Dr Gill said.

According to Dr Gill, the robotic surgery allows kidney transplantation to be performed with great precision, minimal blood loss, and lesser chance of post-operative infection. “This is an advanced procedure performed in very few centres in the world,” he said.

Dr Gustad Daver, Medical Director and Head of Department — Surgery at HNRF, said, “In our endeavour to provide the best possible surgical treatment through advanced technology at Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, we have taken another step by carrying out the first robotic renal (kidney) transplant in Mumbai.

“The team was led by internationally-renowned Robotic Urology Surgeon Dr Inderbir Gill, and comprised Consultant Urologist Dr PP Rao, and Consultant Nephrologists Dr Bharat Shah and Dr Shruti Tapiawala.”

Narrating her experience, leena said that she and her husband had full faith on the HNRF doctors. “It is the latest procedure involving the benefits of lesser incision, lesser pain, and faster recovery,” she added.

Murlidharan had been on dialysis for the past one-and-a-half years,

Murlidharan, who is recouping fast, said that the robotic surgery involved much lesser pain. “I was initially reluctant, but the doctors convinced me about the benefits. I am happy that I went ahead with it,” he said.
