The administration of Vadodara-based prestigious Maharaja Sayajirao University on Thursday rejected the proposal of conferring doctorate degree on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan.

Two senate members belonging to Congress party Amar Dhomse and Kamal Pandya had proposed to confer doctorate degree to PM Modi and film star Bachchan respectively. While rejecting both the proposals, the administration of the university termed it an attempt to get cheap publicity.

Interestingly name of business magnet and chairman of Reliance Industries limited (RIl) Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani was also suggested for honorary doctorate degree. Ambani’s name was suggested by Narendra Rawat, who filed nomination against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the last lok Sabha elections. Rawat is senate member in MS University. He is also General Secretary of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC). According to Rawat Nita Ambani should be honoured for her work as chairman of Reliance Foundation.

The university has already decided to confer honorary degree of doctorate on A M Naik, Chairman and MD of l&T Group as well as Dilip Sanghvi, Founder of Sun Pharmaceuticals, who got Padma Vibhushan recently.

“We are not going to discuss anything about these proposals in the annual general meeting to be held on Friday,” said MS University Vice Chancellor Parimal Vyas, adding that it seems an attempt to avail cheap publicity.
