Union Minister for Human Resources Development Prakash Javadekar said here on Friday that the Government was giving final touches to the new education policy, which would lay thrust on quality education for all.

Speaking at a function organised in Ruia College in north-central Mumbai to facilitate meritorious poor students, Javadekar said that the education policy should be contemporary and be able to address the  aspirations of the new generations. "We are giving final touches to the new education policy, which will lay thrust on quality education for all.  We welcome suggestions on the draft education policy. The deadline for comments on the draft has been extended till September 15, 2016," Javadekar said.

Disclosing that there were currently 20 lakh vacancies of teachers at various levels from primary schools to IITs, the Minister urged students to consider teaching as an honourable career option. They (students) should not confine themselves to pursuing careers in engineering and medical fields," he said.

Averring that education was fundamental to bringing about social change, he said that society should also play an active part in ensuring education for all.  "You cannot entrust the entire responsibility to the Government,” he said. Javadekar handed over cheques for financial assistance to meritorious poor students who had scored high marks in SSC examination of Maharashtra Board, against all odds. The initiative of financially supporting deserving poor students was part of 'MaTa Helpline' project of Maharashtra Times, a leading Marathi newspaper.
