lPG-triggered fire kills eight in Kurla food joint

At least eight people, including a woman, were killed when a leak from lPG cylinder gas triggered a major fire in a restaurant “City Kinara”, a Chinese food joint, at Kurla in north-central Mumbai on Friday afternoon. The fire broke out in the restaurant, located in the vicinity of the Kurla Railway station, at 1.45 pm.

The fire brigade personnel, who rushed with engines and one jumbo tanker immediately afterwards, extricated eight badly charred people from the restaurant premises and rushed them to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared them dead even before admission.

Preliminary investigations revealed that lPG gas which leaked out from one of the two cylinders kept on the first floor of the two-storey restaurant, contributed to the fire. The fire took place when the hotel staff were routing the gas from one of the cylinders to a stove kept on the ground floor.

Till evening, the bodies of eight people killed in the mishap had not been identified.

The Kurla Police have, meanwhile, booked a case against the restaurant owners for alleged negligence and consequent death of eight people.
