In line with the Narendra Modi Government’s decision to advance the 2017-18 Union Budget, the Vijay Rupani Government in Gujarat will also present the State Budget for the fiscal a couple of weeks earlier than its normal time. Every year the Gujarat Government generally presents its Budget in the last week of February. However, this time it would be in the second week of February. Confirming the development, Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said that in coordination with the Central Government, the Gujarat Government has also decided to present its Budget in the State Assembly for the year 2017-18 in mid-February. As Goods and Service Tax (GST) council decided slabs of taxes on GST, the Centre is now prepared to implement GST from the beginning of new fiscal on April 1, 2017. Keeping the fact in mind, Gujarat Government has decided to present its budget earlier. The Narendra Modi Cabinet at Centre had decided to merge railway budget with the general budget and also mulling to present budget in Parliament ahead of its time which is generally February end. According to Patel there would be lots of change in allotting work to officials working in State excise and VAT departments post implementation of GST. The State Government would take decision after consulting with Union Finance Minister in this regard too, he said. Sources in the State finance department informed that in the upcoming budget there would be provision for planned expenditure only and the Government would not announce non-planned expenditure in wake of the changes in tax regime.
