A 34-year-old man was killed and 17 people were injured after lighting struck the southern gates of historic Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. The condition of all those injured continued to be critical but stable, sources at the SSKM Hospital where they were rushed in by the police said.

Three other persons of a family were killed by lighting at Purulia bordering Jharkhand, sources said. The thunder struck when the farmers were working in the field. One person was seriously injured and was undergoing treatment.

The rain gods finally smiled on South Bengal — which had thus far experienced more than 50 per cent shortage in average rain fall — pouring down heavily on Friday late noon even as the weather man predicted heavy showers for another 48 hours.
