left to hold meetings to assess poll results

CPI(M) Politburo and CPI Central Secretariat would convene meetings here on May 18 to assess the outcome of the lok Sabha election results and finalise their strategy in the emerging political scenario.  The left block — CPI(M), CPI, RSP and Forward Bloc — had lost momentum in the very beginning of the poll seasons after they lost unity among themselves and went ahead with fielding own agenda in some States like Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

Moreover, the left parties lost the creation of non-Congress & non-BJP front soon after AIADMK and BJD decided to contest alone. In Kerala, even RSP went with Congress front. In Telangana region, CPI went with Congress alliance. After these goof-ups in alliance makings, the Central leadership of left parties were mooting for post-poll alliance with non-Congress and non-BJP parties.According to party leaders, the Sunday’s meeting would also discuss on strategic alliances in floor of Parliament with non-Congress and non-BJP parties on spate of issues.

The CPI(M) had contested 98 lok Sabha seats in 23 States in these elections. In 2009, the party had won 16 seats, down from 44 seats it held in 2004. CPI has four members in the 15th lok Sabha, while RSP and Forward Bloc have two each.
