A day after he was diagnosed with aortic stenosis, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader lalu Prasad on Wednesday underwent a six-hour-long cardiac surgery — involving three procedures — at the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) here.

Three procedures — an aortic valve replacement, aortic repair and a repairing a three mm hole in the heart — were performed on 66-year-old RJD leader Yadav.“The surgery performed on Yadav — involving three procedures — lasted for six hours and 15 minutes.

Dr Ramakant Panda, the Managing Director of Asian Heart Institute, said that the hospital management took the decision to perform the surgery, after conducting several medical tests on Yadav and evaluating the latter’s heart condition.“laluji has been diagnosed with aortic stenosis and we will be operating on him tomorrow morning. After evaluating some more medical reports, we will decide tomorrow as to what kind of surgery that we will perform on the RJD leader,” Dr Vijay D’Silva, Medical Director of AHI had said on Tuesday evening.

Yadav had flown into Mumbai in the early hours of Monday — shortly before the counting of votes for the Assembly bypolls began in Bihar. In the by-polls, the RJD-JD(U) — Congress alliance walked away with six out of the ten seats in the Bihar Assembly bypoll, outcome of which proved to be a setback for the BJP.
