Kurien nixes Vanzara debate

Published on:

Rajya Sabha was adjourned for 15 minutes on Thursday following uproar by SP, JD(U) and CPI(M) over charges leveled by IPS officer DG Vanzara against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien ruled that the Chair cannot take cognisance of a letter written by an undertrial and did not allow matter to be raised.

Miffed by the ruling, the protesting members walked out to register their protest even as Kurien said the issue pertained to a state and it cannot be raised in the Upper House. The Chair gave the ruling after CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury brought up the issue and his party colleagues backed him.

The members made their intentions clear as soon as the House met for the day with SP, JD (U) and CPI(M) trying to raise the issue and BJP countering them.  Members of all these parties also came into the aisles forcing an adjournment. BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu later said though State-related matters were not discussed in Parliament, his party was willing to discuss the issue of Vanzara if the charges leveled by Haryana IAS officer Ashok Khemka are also taken up.

CBI to examine letter

New Delhi: The CBI said it will examine contents of the resignation letter of jailed IPS officer DG Vanzara, who had quit IPS earlier this week, in connection with its probe fake encounters in Gujarat. “We will examine Vanzara’s resignation letter as and when we receive it through official channels,” CBI Director Ranjit Sinha told reporters here.
