The sugarcane farmers in Mysuru have shown solidarity with the agitating farmers of Madhya Pradesh who are demanding support price for their crop. Farmers in Mysuru staged a protest rally on Thursday condemning the police brutality in MP in which six farmers were killed.
The farmers belonging to the Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers’ Association (KSSGA) and Farmers’ Association condemned the police brutality and sought waiver of loans .
Speaking at the rally, president of KSSGA Kuruburu Shanthakumar said that the farmers from all over the country strongly condemn such brutal acts by the police.
“Farmers were not begging, but were only demanding their rights. The Governments which always say that the farmers are the backbone of the country are actually killing the farmers. This is a mockery of democracy,” he said.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to implement the Swaminathan report, but it has turned out to be a lie,” he added.
The protesters took out a procession from the Gun House to Deputy Commissioner’s office in the city and submitted a memorandum.
Meanwhile, in Karnataka, BJP leader Jagdish Shettar has raised a demand for farm loan waiver and threatened of an agitation. He said in the ongoing Assembly session that if the Government doesn’t write off the farm loan, the BJP would commence an agitation against the Congress Government in the State. The farm loan wavier can trigger a major political controversy ahead of Assembly elections in Karnataka which has seen one of the worst farmers suicides in the country in
the recent past. For both the parties, Karnataka is very crucial and the farm loan waiver can be a point of advantage in the polls. Congress led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has been asked to lead the polls, is playing appeasement politics to the hilt and
is focusing on farmers and polarising vote banks in
the State.
