The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the State Election Commission to arrange for CCTV cameras to monitor the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections.
Hearing a plea from the Opposition BJP which also complained that its candidates were not being allowed to campaign by the TMC goons the Court ordered that all the booths and the strong rooms should be covered by the CCTV cameras.
There are more than 4,500 booths in Kolkata. The BJP has also filed a petition seeking deployment of central forces during the elections. The hearing is likely to be taken up on Wednesday.
BJP State president Sukanto Majumdar welcomed the Court decision saying “this will stop manipulation of EVMs to some extent,” adding we will now seek a direction for the SEC to preserve all the CCTV footages after the elections.
