Kerela, Assam back petition against NJAC

The Congress, which backed the passage of the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act in Parliament, has had a change of heart in the Supreme Court with two of States ruled by it terming the legislation unconstitutional.

On Wednesday, Kerala Government backed the petitioners who have challenged the NJAC law in Supreme Court and submitted its written submissions on the issue highlighting the various grounds on which the NJAC law violated the Constitutional feature of independence of judiciary.

According to sources, Kerala Government is not the only State which has gone against the party line to back the law in Parliament. Even the Assam Government has informed Supreme Court that it is opposed to the NJAC law. The five-judge bench of Justices JS Khehar, J Chelameswar, Madan lokur, Kurian Joseph and Adarsh Goel felt it was too late in the day for the State to take this stand as it returned the submissions of Kerala.
