Kerala is in for tough times as the number of Covid-19 cases in the State are likely to see a hike, according to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Briefing the media on Friday, Vijayan disclosed that Kerala would see a hike in the number of Covid-19 cases in days to come. “It is  the considered opinion of medical experts that situation in Kerala would worsen in days to come,” said Vijayan.

The Chief Minister had on Monday lambasted the State authorities and frontline health workers charging that the Covid-19 preventive measures had gone out of control because of the indifferent and irresponsible attitude of the Government staff deputed to tame the pandemic.

On Friday, the State saw 1,251 new persons testing positive for Covid-19, said the Chief Minister. “Out of this 1,251 new patients, 1061 contracted the pandemic through local transmission. There were 73 persons who could not tell the source from where they contracted the pandemic,” said the Chief Minister. Five persons succumbed to the pandemic on Friday and this took the fatalities to more than 100.

The 1,251 included 77 expatriates and 94 persons who returned to Kerala from other parts of India. “There were five deaths on account of Covid-219 during the last 24 hours and this took the total fatalities in the State to more than 100,” said Vijayan. On Friday, there were five districts in the State each testing more than 100 cases. The last 24 hours ending Friday evening saw the testing of 27, 608 persons in the State.
