Kejriwal pins hopes on public for successful trial

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has conceded that a large number of violators of even-odd scheme cannot be punished.

While declaring blueprint of even-odd scheme on Thursday, Kejriwal has candidly said that if the number of violators is huge, it will mean that the public at large in the national Capital are not in favour of the scheme and it will be discontinued.

It would be pertinent to mention that top police officials have stated at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary KK Sharma that amount of fine should be at least Rs 5,000 for violators to ensure that people will have to pay hefty fine if they violate. The initial proposal was turned down by the Government saying that the amount of fine is too much and it should not be more than Rs 2,000 which is under purview of Motor Vehicles Act.

If the penalty is small, like it is for other traffic violations, the odd-even rule will be violated by many. But if it is set very high, the effect it will have on citizens and the anger it might spark is a matter of concern as well,” said the official.

Criticising the Kejriwal Government, Delhi Congress leader Chattar Singh said that the even-odd scheme is going to be big flop and huge inconvenience to common people from January 1, next year. “The Chief Minister’s statement has clearly indicated that he is not sure about success of this scheme. The way the scheme is being implemented for trial basis, it is bound to be flopped and the main purpose would be defeated,” Singh said.
