Karti Chidambaram on Monday submitted an affidavit to Supreme Court denying allegations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) of tampering with foreign bank accounts during his visits abroad.
The affidavit filed by Karti, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, further stated that during his stay in UK, he approached the Metro Bank and operated two accounts (operational since June 2016 and November 2016). He said that these accounts were closed unilaterally by the bank in March 2017 without giving any reasons. He submitted that all money received in these accounts were remittances from valid accounts held by him, his wife and daughter and no remittance from any other source was received into it.
He denied that he held multiple bank accounts and assets abroad saying that his family owned only one asset abroad which was acquired by transfer of funds through nationalised Indian banks under the RBI's liberalised remittance scheme.
The Court posted the matter for hearing on Tuesday as Karti's counsel senior advocate Kapil SIbal sought permission to travel abroad offering to undertake that upon his visit, he shall not approach any bank or operate any account.
The CBI had alleged irregularities in FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Karti's father was the Finance Minister.
