The deceased student, identified as Nagashri SC, was a first semester Mechanical Engineering student of the prestigious Institute. IIT G officials said that she hails from Shimoga town in Karnataka and she joined the prestigious institute only in July this year.

“She did not go the institute today. Her roommate came back to the hostel around 9.30 am and sar the door locked from inside. Although she shouted the name of her roommate several times, there was no response,” said IITG PRO, Labanu Konwar.

“On informed, the IITG security intimated this to the police, who came and opened the door by force but only to see Nagashri’s body hanging from ceiling fan,” Konwar said.

Nagashri was a border of Dhansiri girls’ hostel in IITG.

Police from the North Guwahati Police station registered an unnatural death case over this. “Our investigation indicated it to be a suicide case. We have recovered a note from inside the room which we believe written by the deceased. However, the exact cause of death will be known only after post mortem,” said the police.
