Yadgir (Karnataka), Jul 28 (PTI) — Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has instructed forest officials to increase vigilance in wildlife conflict zones after two fatal elephant attacks in Chikkamagaluru district.
The minister called for immediate surveillance, prompt alerts to locals, and the deployment of rapid response teams when elephants enter human areas. He emphasized swift compensation for victims’ families and repairs to damaged elephant trenches and fences affected by rain.
A woman and a 63-year-old farmer were recently killed in separate elephant attacks in the Balehonnur area. Khandre expressed concern over the growing number of incidents, even in areas without previous conflict history.
He approved new railway barricades and ordered a study on the shifting patterns of elephant movement. A detailed project report for an integrated command centre using advanced tech to monitor wildlife and issue alerts has also been requested.
Khandre warned that any delays in frontline staff payments or response failures will lead to accountability for range officers. Weekly progress reviews via video conferences have also been mandated.
The minister said these steps are crucial to protecting human lives and ensuring better coexistence between people and wildlife.
