Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday hit back at Defence Minister Rajnath Singh over his allegation that the Congress and its allies were seeking a Bangladesh-style regime change in India.
In a post on X, Sibal accused the government of corruption, capturing institutions and manipulating voter lists. Referring to the anti-corruption movement that preceded the BJP’s rise to power, he said protests had helped bring the party to office and added, “Time to go!”
Singh had accused the Congress and its allies of using protests over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to fuel unrest and undermine democratic institutions.
The remarks triggered a political exchange, with Opposition leaders rejecting Singh’s charge and defending their demand for a change of government through democratic means.
Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram also defended the Opposition’s role, saying political parties in a democracy have a duty to “oppose, expose, depose” the government through constitutional means.
The row comes amid protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over concerns surrounding the revision of electoral rolls.
