Justice Karnan sent to Kolkata jail

Published on:

Justice CS Karnan a former Calcutta High Court Judge who earned the dubious distinction of getting  sentenced to six months in jail — while in office — on contempt charges by the Supreme Court was on  Wednesday sent to Kolkata’s Presidency Jail.

After remaining in "hiding" for nearly two months he was on Tuesday arrested by a team of three senior  Kolkata Police officers from a guest house at Coimbatore — hours after his interim bail plea was  rejected by a vacation Bench of the Supreme Court.

An IG-level officer who supervised the operation said the health of Justice Karnan who was brought to Kolkata by an Air India flight had been checked and showed no abnormalities. “His medical test was completed at the airport and he was straightaway taken to jail,” the senior officer said. Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar was also present at the NSI Airport when he was  flown in from Chennai.

While the Judge was not allowed to confront the media following an earlier Apex Court order he  reportedly said earlier that his fight against corruption would continue.
