Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration took a U-turn after issuing a circular stating recommendation from the High level Enquiry Committee (HlEC) in the February 9 event to “block” registration of 19 students of the 21 found involved in the “Cultural Evening: A country without a post-office night” for next semester.
On Tuesday, JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar told The Pioneer the students are “free” to register themselves in the next two days.
“Actually the High Court had asked the students to appeal before the appellate authority for reconsidering a decision on the punishment given out to them for violation the varsity rules. Since the Vice Chancellor had not given any fresh orders, the recommendation over registrations lacked clarity. Thus, there is no blocking of their registrations,” Kumar said.
On Monday in the circular, Kumar wrote, “The registration of the following students should be blocked till the further order.”
The students, including JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, were named in the circular.
JNUSU general secretary Rama Naga said they were asked not to register for next semester till they submit the fine, ordered by the HlEC in its recommendation over the controversial event.
“The circular was submitted by the administration to all the schools...it is against the High Court order,” said Naga.
After the HlEC gave punishment to students, they approached the High Court who asked them to write appeals to the Vice Chancellor who has not made fresh recommendations yet.
