Jharkhand set to contribute to Modi's clean Ganga mission

Resonance of better days for rivers like the Ganga and the Yamuna has brought some cheer for gasping Damodar and Suvarnrekha of Jharkhand as well.

Responding positively to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) has geared up and initiated a programme to clean the rivers, also the major tributaries of the Ganga.

As the Centre is ready to present a detailed report on cleaning the Ganga and present it before the start of the next session of Parliament in July, the JSPCB within ten days’ time would invite an Expression of Interest (EoI) from the experts and agencies dealing with river pollution for a detailed study. It will also suggest ways to lessen the quantum of untreated effluents left free into the rivers.

“The stretch of Ganga in Jharkhand is just 32 kilometers but both the Damodar and Suvarnrekha are important tributaries of the river. Unless these rivers are cleaned upstream it would not cut much ice just to clean river beds of the Ganga downstream. The Board is preparing the ‘terms of reference’ and would invite experts and agencies working in the field of pollution research.

We want a detailed report on the measures to be taken,” a senior official of JSPCB told The Pioneer on Monday.
