Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has come out with a list of five towns in the State for the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences to be set up by the Centre. In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said the State has identified Chengalpattu (Kanchipuram district), Pudukkottai, Sengipatti (Thanjavur district), Perundurai (Erode), and Thoppur (Madurai) as locations for the proposed AIIMS.
The Chief Minister's letter was in a response to a communication from the Union Minister of Health Dr Harsh Vardhan asking States to identify locations where the Union Government would set up AIIMS.
This is part of the Narendra Modi Government's initiative to set up institutes of excellence all over the country. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in his budget speech had announced the Government's decision to set up five AIIMS in various States. He also disclosed that all States in the country would get at least one AIIMS.
