A soldier and a suspected militant died in two separate incidents of violence in Kashmir on Wednesday. Defence sources said that a gunfight triggered off between a group of infiltrators and the Army deployed along the line of Control (loC) in Tanghdar area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

They said a group of five-six intruders had sneaked in near Eagle Post a week back but the area had been kept under tight surveillance to limit their chances to intrude into the plains of Valley. On Wednesday, contact was established with the hiding intruders who opened fire when spotted. In a bout of fire, a soldier identified as Sepoy Damodar Gurung received fatal injuries, defence spokesman lt Col NN Joshi said.

The operation was in progress when last reports came in from the remote area.In another incident, police said that a youngster was found dead in a house moments after the area was cordoned off by police on a tip-off that militants were hiding in the area. An INSAS rifle, snatched from a policeman earlier this month by an axe-borne attacker was found near the body of the youngster.

Police said that Special Operation Group (SOG)of police , Army’s 29 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Suraipora village of Kreeri in the district. “While the cordon was being laid, few gunshots were heard from a house,” the official said adding the police party approached the house and recovered the body of Mudasir Ahmad Sofi.
