An Army man injured in an overnight militant attack in south Kashmir’s Shopian district succumbed to his injuries while a policeman is battling for his life in a hospital after he resisted the attempt of the militants to snatch his service rifle in the same area and received a pistol bullet from the desperate attacker.

Sources said that a soldier of 62 Rashtriya Rifles identified as Anish T was injured late on Wednesday evening when troops cordoned off a militant hideout in Imam Sahib area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. He was shifted to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

In another incident, a policeman was injured when suspected militants opened fire on a patrolling party of police outside the court complex at Shopian district headquarters on Thursday morning. Sources said that a pistol-borne attacker attempted to snatch the service rifle of the policemen but he resisted and in desperation the attacker opened fire on the cop before fleeing from the scene.

IG Police (Kashmir range) Javed Gilani said that militants fled from the spot after opening fire on the patrol party.
