Jammu Municipal corporation terms end

Published on:

The elected public representatives of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Tuesday joined the league of their counterparts in Srinagar after their existing term ended on November 14.

Besides two Municipal Corporations, the terms of a few other Urban local bodies will expire by the end of this month or in December.

By December 26, all 76 ULBs across J&K will cease to exist.

After the expiry of the terms of ULBs, the Mayors, Deputy Mayors, presidents and vice-presidents lose their power. The powers vested with them get transferred to Commissioners (in case of JMC and SMC) and Administrators or Executive Officers in the case of Municipal Councils and Committees.

As per the prevailing circumstances the Urban local body polls are most likely to be held after the Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

Until the fresh elections are held the common people will have to make a beeline outside the offices of the babus to get their work. done.

Before announcing the poll schedule, the election authorities are mandated to complete the fresh delimitation of municipal wards across the twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, extend the reservation to the Other backward castes as per the new arrangement, remove discrepancies in the electoral rolls as brought out by the various stakeholders while filing their objections.

The election authorities in Jammu and Kashmir while completing the summary revision of the electoral rolls ahead of the Urban local body polls have invited objections from the electorate and political parties to ensure transparency.

Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Tuesday felicitated the Councilors of Jammu Municipal Corporation and commended their efforts for selflessly serving people, fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and ensuring municipal services in respective areas.

He said the elections for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) would be held after completing the delimitation exercise of wards and reserving wards for other Backward Classes.
