A civil rights organisation on Tuesday appealed to President Droupadi Murmu to intervene in the ongoing student agitation at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and urged the administration to hold student union elections without further delay.
The protest entered its 16th day, with students refusing to end their agitation despite the university's decision to conduct elections within 15 days of the approval of the student union's constitution.
Students are demanding that the administration announce a definite date for the polls, which have not been held since 2006, and specify a timeline for approving the constitution.
Jan Hastakshep said a five-member fact-finding team visited the university on Monday and interacted with students.
In a statement, the organisation criticised the university administration and Delhi Police for their actions against students who are continuing a hunger strike and holding a peaceful protest to demand student union elections.
Jan Hastakshep appealed to President Murmu to intervene immediately and direct the university administration to restore student union elections.
It also called for the administration to be instructed to draft a constitution for the student union and hold elections within a clearly defined timeframe.
The organisation further demanded that all punitive measures taken against students during the protest be withdrawn and that no legal or administrative action be initiated against them in connection with the agitation. (with inputs from PTI)
