One history-sheeter was killed and 12 inmates, as well as four prison guards, were injured after violence erupted during an attempted jail break in South Goa’s Sada sub-jail, following which authorities here have ordered two probes into the incident which occurred late on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Vinayak Korbatkar, a history-sheeter who was declared dead on arrival at a local Government hospital in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Speaking to The Pioneer on Wednesday, Additional Inspector-General of Prisons Siddhivinayak Naik said that a probe had been ordered into the lapse, which led to a law and order situation in the port town of Vasco da Gama, where the sub-jail is located. “Yes, a probe has been ordered into the incident,” he said. The official however refused to go into the details of the jail break attempt.
Police sources, however said, that the jail break bid occurred after a slugfest between two rival groups of inmates. “Korbatkar’s group started a fight with a rival group. When the jail guards rushed to stop the fight, the mob of inmates turned on the guards and overpowered them because of the sheer numbers,” sources said. After overpowering the guards, the inmates headed for the main gate of the prison, but were halted by police personnel who had rushed to the site following the commotion.
The incident occurred at 11:30 pm, but it took the police nearly two hours to bring the situation under control and locate all inmates.
Four prison guards and 12 inmates received injuries as a result of the incident and they were later sent to a local Government-run health facility for treatment under police guard. South Goa District Magistrate Swapnil Naik told reporters a judicial probe had been ordered into the death of the inmate Korbatkar.
