Ishrat case: Court rejects application for supplementary charge-sheet

Published on:

In a setback to senior Gujarat cadre IPS officer Satish Verma, a special CBI court in Ahmedabad has rejected his application seeking supplementary charge-sheet of Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Verma had filed an application for certified copy of the charge sheet that was sent to the court concerned which sent it back. The court rejected his application on the ground that it had not taken cognisance of this charge sheet. In view of initiating legal action against the accused named in the charge-sheet, the IPS officer moved to the court.  He is also a member of Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed for the investigation of the Ishrat Jahan and three others' encounter.

Citing the reason for rejection the court stated that the charge sheet had not come on its record and being a third party in the case, the applicant (Verma) could not seek for the copy of the charge sheet.

In the second charge sheet filed by the CBI, names of four Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials including Rajinder Kumar were given. Kumar and three others were charged with murder and criminal conspiracy, and proceedings against them are pending before the CBI court.

In the first charge sheet filed by CBI, they had named seven Gujarat police officers as accused, including IPS officers P P Pandey, D G Vanzara and G l Singhal.
