In a revelation that came a day ahead of the player-auctions for Indian Premier league (IPl) Season-7, the terror outfit —Indian Mujahideen — had hatched a plot to target a couple of IPl fixtures during April 2011, nearly three months before Yasin Bhatkal’s module executed the triple bombings in Mumbai that year.
A senior Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) officer said that Bhatkal aide and IM operative Asadullah Akhtar alias Tabrez came up with this revelation, while he was being interrogated along with Yasin in connection with the July 12, 2011 triple bombings in Mumbai,
Tabrez told his interrogators that their module member Waqas Ibrahim Sad, a Pakistani national wanted in connection with the triple bombings case, had purchased a ticket and watched an IPl match between Mumbai Indians and Pune Warriors at the Wankhede Stadium on April 20.
