Intolerance remark: Congress accuses PM of 'doublespeak'

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks in london that ‘India does not accept intolerance,’ the Congress on Friday accused him of “doublespeak” on such sensitive matters and termed him tacit “endorser” of intolerance.

Attacking PM for not taking action against the hotheads within the BJP, Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma said: “We completely reject the claim that he improved India’s credibility. This is once again a proof of a mindset of I, me, myself, Narendra Modi… It is important to remind the Prime Minister that he has neither condemned, nor acted upon number of incidents which involve his party colleagues, his ministers, the leaders of BJP and the RSS.”

Sharma added since PM has not taken any action against his party members who have been making stray comments, the only inference or conclusion that can be drawn is that “he is very much a tacit endorser.”

The Congress is also against easing of FDI norms in defence sector because there is “no national consensus” on this. Sharma said his party is against this move as “we cannot have those checks removed” in such a sensitive sector. Party is also opposed to opening up of the media sector in news and current affairs.

“We cannot have scrutiny and cabinet committee approval done away with. This government has dispensed with any FIPB scrutiny or CCS approval for FDI up to 49 per cent and put it under automatic route,” Sharma maintained.
