India’s first indigenously built anti submarine warfare (ASW) corvette — INS Kamorta — will be handed over to the Indian Navy by public sector Garden Reach Shipbuilders& Engineers ltd. (GRSE) in Kolkata on Saturday.   The warship will be formally commissioned into service later this month in Visakhapatnam.

INS Kamorta is the first in its class of four corvettes built by GRSE under Project-28 (P28) and has almost 90 percent of indigenous content, officials said here on Friday.INS Kamorta is also the first warship built in the country with indigenously developed special grade high-tensile (DMR249A) steel produced by Steel Authority of India(SAIl).

The keel of the ship was laid in 2006 and the vessel was launched in 2010, they added. The hull of the 3,400 ton and 110 metre long ship encompasses the bulk of sensors and weapon systems indigenously manufactured by various Indian industries. The foldable hangar door fitted for the first time with a rail-less helicopter traversing system will give helicopter operations from the corvette decks a significant edge over existing platforms of other warships.

The ship can attain a speed of 25 knots with the help of four diesel engines and carries weapon systems like torpedoes and rockets besides state of art radar and communication systems to operate in network centric environment. The ship will have 13 officers and 176 sailors once operational.
