Eyeing political revival by piggybacking on the emotive issue of Sutlej Yamuna link (SYl) canal, Haryana’s main opposition party— Indian National lok Dal (INlD) — has now threatened to block highways and disrupt the supply of essential commodities to the national capital to mount pressure on BJP led Central Government for construction of SYl canal.
After its one-day protest of blocking roads at Haryana-Punjab border culminated peacefully on Monday, the Indian National lok Dal has announced that it would intensify its protest to press for the demand of construction of SYl canal.
Haryana’s Hisar MP and Indian National lok Dal leader Dushyant Chautala announced that the party would take its protest to Delhi. The party will disrupt the supply of essential commodities to the national capital if the Centre fails to construct SYl canal, he said while talking to the mediapersons.
Dushyant added that the party will soon announce the future course of action in this regard.
leader of opposition in Haryana Assembly and INlD’s senior leader Abhay Singh Chautala, while talking to the mediapersons said that the party would continue its fight till the SYl is constructed.
lashing out at BJP led Haryana Government, Chautala said that the BJP is betraying the people of the state. The Apex Court has already given the verdict in favour of Haryana but the BJP led Central and State Governments are deliberately delaying the construction of SYl, he added.
Both Punjab and Haryana have been locked in a political and legal dispute over the sharing of the Ravi-Beas waters for decades.
While Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had expressed hope that the contentious issue could be resolved through dialogue, political leaders in Haryana have been maintaining that the Supreme Court directions for construction of SYl canal should be implemented.
