It is India’s first comprehensive nutrition related mobile app with names of food items in 17 Indian languages.

The app is developed to act as a nutri-guide that would help users assess the nutrients that food stuffs contain.

It also helps the users keep track of the energy balance, said Dr Balram Bhargava, Secretary, Department of Health Research and Director General, ICMR.

The app, which was launched recently, provides a comprehensive nutritional information on Indian foods, common Indian recipes including calories, proteins, vitamins and minerals. The app is in line with the National Nutrition Mission (NNM) of the Centre and was launched on the occasion of the inaugural ceremony of the centenary celebrations of the institute.

The app is available for both Android and Apple phones and can be downloaded on playstore or app store. It contains BMI and BMR calculators.

It has a recommended dietary allowance which can be picked based on gender and kind of work.

It provides raw food values, and has an option to search using names in local languages. A user can also check the raw value of a recipe for a given quantity.

Dr Bhargava said, “It is very relevant to the people and going to be an important part of the PM’s National Nutrition Mission. In addition, it would the first step towards ICMR’s renewed focus on combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs).”

“This indeed is an achievement for us in the centenary year. This certainly is one of the biggest outreach efforts for us and an interactive way to make people use the important data we have generated.

NIN App acts as their personal nutrition advisor, literally keeping track of what the user is eating and also as a ready reckoner on nutrient information on raw food and recipes,” said Dr. Hemalatha, Director, ICMR- NIN.
