The stand-off between the Indian and Chinese armies in Chumar and Demchok areas in eastern ladakh has ended and the troops have withdrawn completely to their original position that was before the confrontation started on September 1. This was based on an understanding reached by the two sides about five days back.

While announcing "disengagement and redployment" of their troops, the two sides have also agreed to hold talks to discuss issues pertaining to the maintenance of peace and tranquility on the borders and how to avoid similar situations in future. The talks will be held on October 16-17 in India.

A meeting of the Border Commanders of the two sides was held on Tuesday at Spanggur Gap to confirm that the stand-off between the border troops of India and China in the area has been successfully terminated. The Indian side was represented by Major General AS Bedi.

“As per understanding reached between India and China, the two sides have carried out disengagement and redeployment of border troops in Chumar and Demchok areas in Eastern ladakh on September 26-27, 2014 to restore the status quo ante as on September 1, 2014,” said a statement from Ministry of External Affairs.

“The two sides have agreed that a meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) will be held in India on 16-17 October 2014 to discuss various issues pertaining to the maintenance of peace and tranquility in the border areas,” the statement added.
